Climbing Health Mountain
In a small, bustling town at the foot of the Rockies, three friends found themselves at a crossroad. Brandon, Tom, and James had long been concerned about their ever-tightening belts, and it was becoming clear that their attempts at countless fad diets had brought them nothing but headaches, cravings, and one particularly terrible cabbage soup incident. Enter Coach White, the wise mentor who was known for his unorthodox wisdom—a blend of military discipline, a welcoming smile, and the ability to break the toughest people down to build them back up stronger.
Coach White had heard about the trio's woes, and he invited them for a Saturday morning hike—no strings attached. Reluctant but hopeful, Brandon, Tom, and James put on their barely-used hiking boots, figuring they might at least enjoy the views, if nothing else.
As the group started their climb up the mountain trail, James—the self-proclaimed "statistics guy"—began talking about all the calorie-tracking apps he’d downloaded. "If I just stick to 1,200 calories a day, I’ll lose 10 pounds in two weeks! It’s math!" he declared. Coach White grinned but said nothing.
Brandon, between breaths, chimed in. "I'm trying this juice cleanse, Coach. You think it’ll work?"
"Depends. Will it help you move a mountain?" Coach White asked, eyes twinkling mischievously.
"Move a mountain?" Brandon raised an eyebrow, slightly confused but intrigued.
Coach White paused mid-trail and turned to the group. "Let me tell you all a story—one that involves you, this trail, and a little something called patience."
The friends all gathered around, thankful for a break from their aching legs.
"Imagine you're trying to move this mountain," Coach White began, gesturing at the massive ridge before them. "You think you can shove it out of the way if you just work hard enough, maybe starve yourself to fit through the crevice, or take a shortcut down the slope?" He gave them a moment to picture the absurdity. "No way, right? Instead, what if you got healthy and strong enough—physically and mentally—to handle the journey, one step at a time, with all the twists and turns this mountain trail takes?"
Brandon, Tom, and James exchanged glances. "So..." Tom hesitated, "are you saying we shouldn’t be focused on just losing weight?"
"Exactly," Coach White nodded, settling on a rock. "When you’re too obsessed with the scale, you miss the bigger picture—like building the health foundation you actually need to thrive. Instead of trying to fight your body, why not nourish it, get stronger, and trust that it'll let go of what’s not serving you? Like this mountain, it'll take patience."
James frowned, thinking of his calorie tracker. "But what about results? What if we never lose the weight?"
Coach White smiled gently. "Results happen when you’re ready—just like this trail reveals the view when you’ve climbed high enough. You focus on building health, and the weight—if it’s meant to—will fall off as a side effect. You’ll sleep better, you’ll think more clearly, your energy will come back. Weight is just one part of the picture, my friends."
Tom chimed in, "So you're saying it's about creating a healthy environment—inside us—so that the weight loss happens naturally?"
Coach White nodded. "You got it. It’s like planting seeds in good soil. If you nourish the soil, tend to it, and let nature work its magic, it’ll grow. But if you force it, starve it, or try shortcuts, you’ll never get the beautiful growth you want. So forget about scales for a while. Let’s focus on this hike, on breathing in this fresh mountain air, and see where our bodies take us."
As the group continued their hike, a sense of ease replaced their usual anxious thoughts about calories, restrictions, and scales. Brandon began noticing how great it felt to move his legs, the air filling his lungs. Tom began to laugh more, the tension in his shoulders easing as he realized health wasn't a race but a journey. And James—well, he realized that maybe, just maybe, he didn’t need a data point to feel good about himself.
That day, they didn’t conquer the whole mountain, but they didn’t need to. They learned something more valuable—how to take one solid step at a time, with health as their guide, not numbers on a scale. They trusted the path they were on and allowed their bodies to lead the way, one healthy habit at a time.
And so, as they walked back down, Coach White turned to them with a smile. "You keep walking towards health, my friends, and the rest will fall into place. The mountain’s not going anywhere—but now, you know how to meet it."
The Lesson:
Focus on cultivating health, and let the weight fall as a natural result. Patience, trust, and a full-spectrum approach are the true paths to a healthy life.
